This remarkable still life depicts a table crowded with, among other things, a gilded covered goblet, a wide saucer-shaped silver tazza, a celestial globe painted with images of the constellations, a skull wearing a laurel wreath, and an extinguished candle, all rendered in exquisite detail with careful attention paid to the effects of light and texture. While the arrangement of objects may appear casual, the composition is artfully balanced along two diagonal axes centered on the two cups that lie crossed on the table. The repetition of ovoid shapes throughout the painting and the monochrome tonality with its restricted range of hues and values, a hallmark of Heda's style, assures the seamless integration of the sundry objects into a unified whole.<br />

Early Modern European Court Life
This sugar caster consists of an octagonal body topped by a domed lid. The body stands on a molded, octagonal base with alternating concave sides, a design carried through the rest of the body and the lid. The lid is pierced with geometric and floral patterns that alternate on each facet, and is surmounted by a rounded finial. The tall, slender proportions of the caster are counterbalanced by the horizontal moldings that decorate the base, body and lid. An unidentified coat of arms appears on the body of the caster.

This painting, done in thick brushstrokes, shows a group of women gathered on the grass in a wooded area. There are six figures, four seated and two standing, and they fill the foreground of the composition. Life in Ceramics Timeline Panel Text
Round porcelain jar with iron pigment under colorless glaze. An abstract dragon spirals around and up the body of the piece, marked by quick brushstrokes indicating scales and unrestrained swirls indicating features such as its head and feet. A slight valley in the contour of the jar marks where two separately thrown pieces were joined together.<br /> The foot is rather small for the size of the body.<br /> <br /> This is a white porcelain jar decorated with iron-painted dragon, which wraps around the jar three times, displaying dynamic strokes of brush. The dragon&rsquo;s head is not rendered; its two eyes have been tersely painted instead. Jars with iron painted dragons, rendered in an abstract from, were produced in large quantities in the 17th century; many of them were produed in regional kilns. Despite slight damage to its rim, this jar is preserved as intact.
