This print is vertically oriented with gray markings. A cream border surrounds it and it has “MORNING” written below it. The lower half of the print has a busy square. There is a pyramid of people to the right, with lovers, beggars, and a woman warming her hands over a fire. The left has a woman in a gown and a small boy behind her. Beyond them in the distance is a large mass of people carrying posters. The upper half shows the tops of the buildings that line the square. The rooftops has a dusting of snow, and the clouds are dark as if it were an early winter morning.<br />

This print portrays a lively interior scene in the 17th century Dutch Republic. There are many figures around the large room, including men, women, and children. At the far right a man tries to embrace a resisting woman. Beside them, a man and a woman dance while a fiddler plays and others look on. On the left, a woman tends to a child as behind her a couple descend a wooden stairway from an upper floor. There are items such as cured meat, a lantern, a chair and laundry, hanging around this room.

Groups of men gamble, smoke, and drink in a dark guardroom. In the left foreground a seated man wearing a red sash lights his white clay pipe, while his companion pauses his smoking to listen to a man standing next to him. The red of the smoker&#39;s sash is repeated in the flag and fabrics strewn about in the right foreground, which form part of a still-life of weapons, musical instruments, and glinting armor heaped together against the wall. Between these brightly lit foreground vignettes the scene recedes into the darkened interior where a group of five men gather about a table to gamble.

The circular room’s ceiling is painted with a sky motif populated by cupids; the room also features ornamental mouldings above four windows that depict musical instruments, and busts on pedastals are placed between the windows. A large number of well-dressed men and women sit while a group of musicians in the center of the room perform on a piano, flutes, cellos, a harp, and other stringed instruments. The print is framed by an ornamental border, and a stretch of tasseled fabric below the scene contains a title and a coat of arms.<br /><br /><u>Marks/Inscriptions:</u><br />

Artist's sketch from life; Kirchner developed a rapid, stroke-oriented (as opposed to detail-oriented) sketch style when out in the world. Appears to be (though not with certainty) two men conversing on the left, a man accompanied by a woman in a very tall hatt in the center/center-right, and a figure in the far right bottom corner foreground leaning toward a surface (a piano? cleaning a table?). Background and tables are suggested with various lines, but unclear.

This etching portrays a lively tavern scene in the 17th century Dutch Republic. The large room has rough plank walls and a stone floor. There is an open hearth on the right and a long table with a bench in the background. There are many figures engaged in various activities, but most are clustered around a seated man playing a violin. One man stands to watch, another, with arms upraised, is singing and a woman tends to a young child. The scene is depicted in great detail and there is lettering on the bottom of the print.
