Lesson Plans

This collection provides access to the collected lesson plans created for various teacher workshops conducted at UMMA since 2003. Each lesson plan provides an outline of the session, its grade level as well as media, images and links to resources that can be used during the lesson.

In addition, this folder contains lessons related to objects in UMMA's permanent collection. They feature many disciplines: studio art, art history, writing, math, science, social studies, and literature and can be adapted to fit your grade level and objectives.

Lesson Plan: Community Contracts
Wood-carved, standing male figure 40 inches in height. Its shoulders and torso are impaled with iron blades, nails and fragments. The torso is long, arms at side are bent at elbow and hands rest on lower abdomen. The right wrist wears a bracelet with attachments. The legs are truncated, with twisted metal anklet on right foot. The face is naturalistic, the mouth slightly open, the nose long and narrow with slightly flared nostrils. Eyes are almond shaped, may have had inlay that is now gone. The top of the head shows a tiered, "layer cake like" coiffure. The figure has a long and deep crack down the entire length of its left side, from top of the head to the left ankle.

Lesson Plan: Not a Failure . . . Just a Draft
This canvas is saturated in layered paint in shades of muted browns, oranges, ochres, and yellows, and crossed by lines: some dark and some light, some on the surface, some buried beneath the surface color. A bold horizontal line cuts across about a quarter of the way from the bottom. On the right, there are several faint verticals. At the top, two horizontal lines underlap and overlap with two diagonals.

Lesson Plan: Egungun Mask
A massive wood-carved headdress with stylized face (showing classic Yoruba features) of bulging eyes with defined upper lids, long, straight, triangular nose, symmetrical scarification patterns consisting of three horizontal lines on each cheek, and a short beard from ear to ear just underneath the lower lip. Two large “ears” protrude on either side of head and act as “scaffolding” for numerous attachments of symbolic content: birds and lions predominate, but also visible are amulets, wooden claws and beads, crosses, and an insignia shield of some kind. The ears terminate in two oblong mirrors with lions leaping off of each. Layers of pigment are visible, giving the impression that it has been repainted over time.

Lesson Plan: Zoom In: The Significance of Detail
This remarkable still life depicts a table crowded with, among other things, a gilded covered goblet, a wide saucer-shaped silver tazza, a celestial globe painted with images of the constellations, a skull wearing a laurel wreath, and an extinguished candle, all rendered in exquisite detail with careful attention paid to the effects of light and texture. While the arrangement of objects may appear casual, the composition is artfully balanced along two diagonal axes centered on the two cups that lie crossed on the table. The repetition of ovoid shapes throughout the painting and the monochrome tonality with its restricted range of hues and values, a hallmark of Heda's style, assures the seamless integration of the sundry objects into a unified whole.<br />

In the bottom&nbsp;right corner of the painting, there are two buildings placed at the bottom of a hill that has plants growing on it. Next to them is a small cluster of trees, close enough where their trunks are visible. In the distance, there are more trees running across the painting,&nbsp;however, only the foliage is visible. The leaves on these trees stand out because each individual leaf is inked. There is another small cluster of buildings on the far left of the painting behind these trees. Further in the distance are mountains.

A small urban house is seen in a nocturnal view set in winter. The house is covered with icicles hang from the gables and over the first floor windows and door. There is no illumination from inside the house, although there are lights in adjacet houses; the house is illuminated by a cool white light that, along with the house, illuminates the chain-link fence to the right and the trees flanking the house.
