Subject matter
This photograph depicts a view of an urban street scene in Brazil’s capital city, Rio de Janeiro. The photograph was taken looking upwards at the electrical wires that are densely strung together in the street. Layered and knotted, the canopy of wires stretch in a haphazard way back and forth down the street, conjoining at telephone poles and splitting off to feed into buildings and down alleyways. The buildings seem to be from different eras and in various states of decay, some appearing stained and covered with graffiti, others appearing freshly painted. The narrow winding street, the upwards view, and the complicated system of wiring creates a fascinating and disorienting view of the city.
