Credit LineGift from the Collection of David S. Rosen MD, MPHSubject matterIn this photograph, three children stand, about to walk onto a New York street, leaving their brownstone. One child stands with an arm on the railing, one knee crossed. The second stands with an arm reaching towards the first child, one leg on the step behind. A third child stands in front of the doorway, with one door open. She is putting on a mask, while the other two are already wearing theirs. Dettached from the context in which the children done these masks, the scene seems uncanny and humorous, which is charateristic of Helen Levitt's approach to street photography.
Physical DescriptionThis photograph depicts three masked children standing on the steps of a browstone building in a city.
