Credit LineMuseum purchase made possible by the Jean Paul Slusser Memorial FundSubject matterThis photograph is a profile-view of a young man named Simon. Seated on a subway train, he leans his head against the wall. His head tilts slightly in the direction of the camera, but he does not meet the camera's gaze and instead looks pensively into the distance. A round black mass, slighly out of focus, occupies the image's lower left foreground--most likely the curved back of a man occupying the subway seat between Simon and the photographer. With the narrow depth of field, other commuters are visible, albeit blurred, in the background.
