Credit LineGift of The Morris and Beverly Baker Foundation, in memory of Morris D. Baker, a graduate of The University of Michigan School of Architecture, 1952Subject matterThis photograph shows an interior view of what appears to be a parking garage; a large mural of an American flag adorns the weathered brick wall opposite the photographer. Symmetrically composed with the flag at its center, the photograph’s scene appears almost stage-like. Beneath and before the flag, three white men stroll, two of them look toward Frank, apparently aware of the photographer’s glance. One man appears to smile in acknowledgement, the other stares back in apprehension. Heading in the same direction, two automobiles half occupy the frame, one’s back half exits the image, the other emerges into it. Within the dark car, two black individuals driving appear to look towards the other men and the flag. The directionality of the driving cars and the walking men paired with the fanfare of the flag evokes a processional feeling. Flanking this action, two columns supporting the cement ceiling above stand at either side of the frame, further lending the image a shrine-like appearance.
Physical DescriptionThis photograph depicts a cement interior with individuals on foot and in cars passing before a large American flag mural painted on the wall.
