Subject matter
A black-and-white photograph of a beach with a volleyball net set up in the sand. A solitary figure on the left foreground walks with his face turned down. Further out, groupings of one to three people sun bathe and mill about, while some people play in the shallows. The composition is divided into distinct planes of textures, showing extreme definition and detail of sandy pockmarks on the beach, the placid and taut surface--almost lacking in incident--of the ocean, and the amorphous wispy clouds of in the sky.
