Credit LineGift of Stanley T. Lesser, A.B. 1951, J.D. 1953Subject matterThis image depicts a rearing horse and two men attempting to subdue it inside of an arena. The horse’s mane flows upwards as it leaps into the air. The size of the animal dwarfs the men struggling with the horse's rein. The men wear cowboy boots, dark pants and wide brimmed cowboy hats. The image was created with a flash bulb, which is evident in the white reflections gleaming off of the horse and man’s eyes. In spite of the flash, components of the image still appear blurry—especially the background of the scene. Above the arena hang multiple rows of flags, which are blurred by the long exposure of the camera. The angle at which the image was created causes the arena’s walls to slope diagonally within the frame, which lends to the feeling of instability and tension created by the rearing horse.
