A founding member of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours, Varley promoted landscapes composed of ‘clear skies, distances and water’ which he claimed ‘are the beauties most sought after in the art of watercolours.’

The path is flanked by small hills and shaded with large trees, and a person seems to walk along the left side of the path.
