Subject matter
This pastel seascape—most likely of the Atlantic shore—reflects the life experience of Dwight William Tryon who spent his life in New England. In 1906, he received a commission from the businessman William K. Bixby for a moonlit seascape, and traveled north to Maine to create studies. The completed work "The Sea: Evening" (1907) is now at the Freer. Tryon often depicted similar scenes at different times of the day and is best known for his landscape and seascape paintings in the Tonalism style.
