Fashion and Adornments in Global History

This colored engraving depicts two women and one child in elaborate dress. The central figure is a woman standing in a dark green dress decorated with lighter green trimmings. Her hair is gathered in a headpiece made up of green ribbons and pink flowers. To the right of her a woman in a black and grey dress sits on a burgundy chaise. The child standing on the left of the composition is outfitted in a navy blue and pale blue costume with a jacket trimmed in white. The child reaches toward something kept in the standing woman’s left hand.
Generally, formal attire like this was worn by wives of high-ranking officials or Chinese noblemen, but lower-ranking officials’ wives also wore such clothing as part of their bridal dress. Though it is difficult or impossible to know for certain, because of the low rank of her husband yet the highly formal nature of her clothing, this portrait could be depicting a woman in her bridal attire.
This standing female nkisi mihasi, or “benevolent” power figure, exhibits many of the typical traits associated with the Luba of the Upemba Basin, and more specifically, with the Kisale center of production. These features include a disproportionately elongated torso, terraced coiffure, diamond-shaped scarification patterns covering the abdomen and back, and, a crescent moon symbol on the pubis. In addition, this figure possesses a round head with almond-shaped eyes, an open mouth, flat and level shoulders, protruding breasts and bellybutton, and horizontal lines across its upper thighs. Multiple strands of white, dark blue, and light blue beads adorn the figure’s neck, upper chest, wrist, hips, and ankle. A cotton loincloth has been wrapped around the figure’s hips.

This painting shows a scene set in a courtyard with high white walls that is open to the sky. Beyond the wall there is flowering vegetation, tall trees and a tower with a balustrade with keyhole shaped openings. There are two clay pots resting on top of the wall and an oriental style carpet hanging over one side. Within this courtyard, there are three women who are looking at two small leopards that wear metal chains and stand in a keyhole shaped opening of the far right wall. The women, grouped together on the far left side, are wearing 19th century Moroccan dress, including richly embroidered, garments, headscarves and shoes. There is bright sunlight streaming into the room which creates shadows on the walls and floor.

This fibula, a type of brooch used to pin outer garments, features a crossbar that ends in three onion-shaped terminals, which give the fibula a shape reminiscent of a crossbow. An arched bow connects the crossbar to the longer catchplate, which is ornamented with vegetal motifs.
