Subject matter
This is a drawing of a prisoner in a prison cell. German artist George Grosz was drafted into the military in 1917. Only a month after being drafted, he was transferred to a sanatorium. The theme of prison and incarceration seen here are also seen in Grosz's 1920 watercolor, ""The Convict": Monteur John Heartfield after Franz Jung's Attempt to Get Him Up on His Feet," at MoMA.

Physical Description
A man clothed in pants, shoes, and a long-sleeved shirt sits at a small table with his hands folded. Part of a loaf of bread sits on the upper left corner of the table. The man is in a small room with a small, square, barred window high on the wall behind him. There is a toilet without a lid behind him to his left.
