Kunstadter in memory of Sigmund Kunstadter, Class of 1922Subject matterPrior to his artistic career, José de Rivera was a machinist, blacksmith, and a tool and die maker, thus making an easy transition to sculpture in metal. De Rivera's sculptures from 1954 and onwards are characterized by polished metal and curvilinear forms such as this. José de Rivera began making sculptures in 1930, and was know for his abstract metallic sculptures. From 1937-1938 de Rivera worked for the Federal Art Project of the Works Project Administration in New York. De Rivera's artistic influences included Mondrian, Brancusi, and Vantongerloo.
Physical DescriptionThis is an abstract metallic sculpture with a black square base. The silver metal of the sculpture is little thicker than wire and forms two into intersecting circular shapes.
