Docent Thematic Tours

Thematic Tours are offered to school groups and the general public. The tour does not specifically relate to curriculum standards; it creates a cohesive thematic strand and relates various media and objects. Tour notes include potential stops, background information, and images.

Doors Tour
A large, Gothic ruin dominates the scene. The west portal of a large church stands with full light, from the left, illuminating its portal. Along its second story ivy grows across the facade while trees cluster in the L-shaped angle toward the right and other vegetation is evident along the roofline of the structure. Several women enter through the main doorway of the building. A stone wall encircles the structure and two houses occupy the land immediately to the left of the church ruin. In the foreground a lane leads past the church with a man leading a black horse and a running hound in the right foreground, and a figure with its back to the viewer is visible at the left foreground. Behind the scene, dark, wind-swept clouds indicate a recent storm that has now passed, allowing golden light to suffuse the landscape.

Power Tour    
This elegant self-portrait depicts a half-length figure of a man in three-quarters profile with his left arm resting on a stone ledge. The somber colors of his garb, consisting of a white shirt with a dark robe, is offset by luxurious details: the fur collar of his robe, the black ribbon and gold chain around his neck, the embroidered collar and cuffs of his shirt, and the three rings on his right hand. Two pink carnations appear on the ledge before him.

Family Pictures Tour
A full-length portrait of a standing male in a lanscape setting. To the left of the composition stands a pair of birches near the figure; to the right, the landscape opens up to a distant expanse of trees and hills. The man stands facing to the right but looking out of the canvas to the left. He holds a bow and quiver of arrows; a black hat with a feather is on the ground at his feet. He is dressed in tan pants and waistcoat with a green frock coat and black boots.

Greetings Tour
St. John the Evangelist sits in the foreground with a book open on his knee and quill pen poised over its pages. Two books rest next to him and an eagle has alighted on an adjacent rock. St. John looks up and to his right to see a standing figure of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ, who appear in a glowing mandorla hovering in the sky. A vast panoramic view of a bustling harbor and formidable mountains unfolds behind St. John and extends into the distance.

I Am Not Myself Tour
This is a face mask embroidered extensively wtih glass beads. Two long panels hang down the front and back of the wearer. The humanoid face at top has two round eye holes allowing the wearer to see, a strip of fabric for a nose, and an open, upturned mouth. Ears are protruding disks attached on either side of the face . The top of the head is covered with small, corklike knobs covered with black cloth. The beadwork is predominantly green with intricate, scallop-shaped patterns along edge of the panels; vertical, star-like patterns fill the center of the panels. The interior of panels is lined with damask.

Mood in Landscape Tour
Dark landscape set atop a rocky mountain with sparse vegetation. There is a small boulder in the left foreground space with a dead tree standing beside it; in the right foreground there is what appears to be a small cave. A dead and broken tree lies across the bottom of the picture frame. There are mountains in the distance and a dark stormy sky above with a break in the clouds near the center of the canvas that reveals a sunny blue sky.

Protection Tour
A lunette-shaped panel composed of red, blue, white, brownish purple and yellowish brown stained glass joined together by lead cames depicting a seraph. Four leafy fronds, taken from another medieval window, have been inserted here between the seraph's head and shoulders. The panel is the upper half of a roundel originally installed in the west rose window of Reims Cathedral.

School Pictures Tour
M. Bachelier is shown seated at a desk dressed in a high powdered wig and sumptous gold-embroidered velvet coat and waistcoat. Behind the figure is a rich cloth, pulled back to reveal columns. On the elaborately carved desk are papers and a writing set. M. Bachelier extends his left hand towards the viewer, suggesting that we have interepted him while writing at his des. The painting's coloring consists of rich burgundy red, green, tan and gold.

Engagement Strategies:

This tour looks at how artists use body and facial expression and hand gestures to convey meaning in art.

Ask students to put hands in expressive greetings/ gesture of fear, surprise, deep thought, etc.  Repeat with face.

Discuss how we read meaning in expression and gesture with our friends just as we can in art.
