Hands Tour

Docent Thematic Tour

Jim Cogswell, faculty at the Stamps School of Art and Design, prompted docents to consider creating a tour of hands, their gestures, and their implied meaning. In his Cosmogonic Tattoos installation in the Commons, he highlights how hands reach out towards each other, push away, create music, destroy objects . . .

To create a tour around this theme, please use the attached images and key. Some questions or themes to consider include:

How do hands communicate?

What do these specific gestures imply?

How can hands display power or humility, care or anger, blessing or curse?

What can we deduce about the person simply by their hand placement?
