This black and white print depicts an animated and detailed scene of nude figures and mythical beasts on the surface of the sea.Two men, with seaweed hair and riding half horse/half fish creatures, strike out at each other. A man and a woman ride a beast with a scaly body and the head of a fierce dog. In the background, a man holding a trident stands with his back to the viewer. Action and motion are expressed with billowing drapery, flowing hair and moving waves. The wide mouthed expressions of the figures and animals suggest yelling and noise in this chaotic scene. Among the many details depicted by the artist is a plaque held by the woman that has his initials.

This sober, pyramidal composition consists of five figures within an interior. A seated woman and child occupy the center of the composition while flanking her to the left is a kneeling older woman with her left hand on the child her right hand on the cradle. To the right of the seated woman is a putti holding a ewer and standing next to a basin. Standing behind the seated woman is a standing woman with hands raised. All of the women are dressed in generalized classical drapery.

This study depicts a rectangular chapel with the side walls bent outward at an angle in order to provide a clearer view of the decoration. The chapel design centers upon a sarcophagus placed beneath a painted altarpiece of the Virgin and Child, which are both set within a semicircular architectural projection that extends dynamically from the wall. On the left the pair of angels that support a large oval-shaped painting reach vigorously outward, their wings overlapping the pilasters. On the right appears another sarcophagus surmounted by a pair of putti. Leaning out from the oval niche above the sarcophagus is a female half-figure—probably a portrait of the deceased—making a gesture of devotion toward the altar.

This bronze plaque features a pair of oxen pulling a four-wheeled wagon with six passengers. The seated driver holds a rod in his right hand and a two-tined fork in his left. An older figure holding a flaming vessel stands behind him, followed by a seated figure wearing classical drapery and a laurel wreath. The next figure, seated in the middle of the cart, is an older female, nude to the waist, who holds a cornucopia full of fruit and raises her left hand to point skyward. This maiolica dish is covered by a radial pattern consisting of abstract leaves and curling tendrils punctuated with flowers all centered around a yellow disk in the center of the well. The harmony of the design stems from radial symmetry of the pattern as well as the restricted palette of blue and a soft brass-yellow.

A nude woman with long hair flowing down her back grasps a tree branch with her right hand and bends it downward in order to more easily pluck the green fruit dangling at its tip with her left hand. Her white body contrasts starkly with the darker tones of the surrounding landscape. Leaf from a Gradual with St. Lawrence

This leaf from a manuscript contains seven lines of Latin text with musical notation. The initial letter, "C," of the opening word "Confessio" is made from a curved vegetal form. The text is preceded by a painted miniature in a circular frame that is, in turn, enclosed by a golden square. The miniature depicts a man with a tonsure and a golden halo standing in a verdant landscape. He holds a palm leaf in his left hand and rests his right hand on a grill. The left and upper margins of the page are decorated with green and pink leaves and flowers and small gold circles.

This drawing depicts a serene landscape. A road running alongside a stream appears in the foreground among rocky outcrops, thick vegetation and bushy trees. The vista opens out in the middle ground and includes a lake at the right with a church standing on its shores at the left. A town is visible on the far shore of the lake and low mountains rise in the distance.

The Seated Violinist

This etching portrays a lively tavern scene in the 17th century Dutch Republic.The large room has rough plank walls and a stone floor. There is an open hearth on the right and a long table with a bench in the background. There are many figures engaged in various activities, but most are clustered around a seated man playing a violin. One man stands to watch, another, with arms upraised, is singing and a woman tends to a young child. The scene is depicted in great detail and there is lettering on the bottom of the print.

Label copy
The brilliant blue, pink and green palette of this leaf, as well as the use of gold and blue ink for the text, are distinctive. Like the leaf from a French breviary (cat. no. 10), this deluxe breviary was probably intended more for show that for regular use.
