Subject matter
Photographed while Kertész was studying at the officer-candidate school in Görz, Austria, this photograph depicts a fellow soldier writing a letter. The photograph appears to have been taken in the soldiers' sleeping quarters, as there are rows of beds behind him as well as hooks hanging on the wall displaying packs and other gear. This intimate portrayal of an anonymous soldier offers a poignant representation of daily life during the early days of World War I.
