Subject matter
This plate depicts the scene from the epic poem, The Odyssey  in which suitors are lining up in a desperate attempt to be Penelope's new husband. In this print she seems to glare down at the man who is playing an instrument at her feet. In the background are the other suitors who are taking over Odysseus's home while he is gone. Oskar Kokoschka made 45 lithographs over two years to complete the story.
