Photographed while Kertész was studying at the officer-candidate school in Görz, Austria, this photograph depicts a fellow soldier writing a letter. The photograph appears to have been taken in the soldiers' sleeping quarters, as there are rows of beds behind him as well as hooks hanging on the wall displaying packs and other gear.
