Subject matter
In this photograph, three street pavers set a road in Paris. The central figure is the focus of Atget's attention; the background behind the street paver is somewhat blurry, drawing attention to the details of the man's clothing and the wooden tool he uses to press the stones into the ground. On either side of this figure is an older worker and a child, indicating that this form of manual labor was performed by a wide range of age groups.
