An oil painting on canvas, this is an abstract painting predominantly using black and white oil paints. The background appears to be white paint with a black box on the upper half. The two colors are connected by a long black brushstroke down the middle. The brushstroke does not touch the edges of the canvas but instead takes up 2/3 of the canvas length-wise and 1/3 width-wise.

This print shows a chaotic scene with a white skeleton in the center. In the upper left, there are a series of sea creatures, including a grey colored shark, pink colored squids and two octopuses in shades of orange. At the bottom of the print, the skeleton is surrounded by a large lizard, skulls, and other figures. A moon and stars are in the upper left corner. The print is signed (l.r.) In an ominous landscape a crowd of nude men, women and children, their bodies silhouetted against the descending gloom, struggle frantically to escape rising floodwaters. The figures gesture wildly and strenuously twist their long athletic bodies into a seemingly infinite variety of contortions as they clamber up the last hilltops and trees. A city stands on a hill and appears through the trees in the background.

Label copy
Dewey Garrett is a self-taught woodturner particularly interested in explorations of the formal and material qualities of turned wood pieces. “I am interested in the transformation and contrasts discovered through woodturning. The process of converting a featureless block of wood into a graceful, symmetrical form is always fascinating and full of surprises.”
Garrett’s turned palm vessels provide a case in point. He uses salvaged wood from California construction projects, often making use of the area’s native palm trees, a wood not traditionally used in turning. Unlike woods with annual ring structures, palm wood consists of long fibers within a spongy pith, qualities that must be considered when determining the proper size, shape, and wall thickness needed to create a form that will harmonize with the wood’s material properties.
