This painted miniature Shahnama page was made by the Shiraz and Timurid schools, ca. 1460 in Baghdad, Iraq. The painting is done in ink, opaque watercolor and gold leaf on paper. The scene, <em>Iraj is Slain by His Brothers</em>, is part of the Shahnama of Firdausi, the Persian book of kings.

PAST-F18 Levinson - ENGLISH 383 / JUDAIC 389 - Jewish Culture in America: 1945 to the present (study case)
A black and white print that features a person holding his head in clenched fists. His clothing is creased by his dynamic position, back is haunched. Below the drawing is stylized Hebrew block print. Translated it reads "These martyrs I well remember, and my soul melts with secret sorrow. Evil men have devoured us and eagerly consumed us". The calligraphy is a prayer recited for the Musaf Service during Yom Kippur.

Standing human figure on a round base with hands at the sides. There is a metal loop around one ankle and a string of black beads around the neck. On each cheek are four horizontal marks topped by three vertical marks. The hair is in a conical shape with a raised central groove surrounded by diagonal lines on each side and coated with blue pigment.

A black, horned beast lurks in the background, holding a phone overhead that has two earpieces, attached together with no cradle.  In the background, a headstone-shaped form silhouettes the dancing figure.<br /><br /> The drawing is signed and dated in ink (l.l.) "KOSTABI 1984".

PAST - Adornment Pieces from the African Collection 
Conical shaped crown with multi-colored beadwork and a beaded fringe veil. From the bottom of the crown moving up, there are three rows of four faces, where the opposing faces have the same color. On the bottom, 2 faces are blue and 2 are green; the next row has 2 white and 2 brown faces; the top row has 2 white and two yellow faces. The red beads on the faces may resemble scarification marks. There are three-dimensional birds along the sides of the crown as well as a large one on top that is removable. 7 strings of multi-colored beads hang from the crown; most of the beaded veil is missing.

Standing male figure on a round base with hands at the sides. Around the waist are two strings of black and blue beads, a  string of round, orange beads around the neck, as well as a geometric pattern on the abdomen and brass around the ankles. On each cheek are four horizontal grooves topped by three vertical grooves and three vertical grooves. The pupils are metal and the hair is in a conical shape with a small knob and coated in blue pigment.
