These tours are designed to connect students with age-appropriate content and skill development. They link Michigan educational standards with the University of Michigan Museum of Art's permanent collection and offer a variety of subjects including: science, language arts, social studies, math, and writing.

First Grade Tour: Art on the Move

First Grade Tour: Cooperation Central
A bearded man, wearing majestic red robes with a large ermine collar and a green turban surmounted by a crown, sits on a throne at left. He leans forward, holding a long thin scepter in his right hand while touching his chest with his left. Before him stand two women supporting a third, who has fainted. This third woman wears a splendid blue robe ornamented with a row of opulent clasps, a luxurious golden cloak lined with pink fabric, and a crown that seems to tilt precariously on the back of her head. Second Grade Tour: My Community, My World
The low horizon used in this landscape painting creates a sense of expansive sky and flat terrain, which is divided equally between river and land. Figures and animals engage in variety of activities on the riverbank and in boats, including fishing and ferrying cargo and animals. Silhouetted against the vast sky stands a fortress on a spur of land with an orange flag flying from its tower. The opposite bank is visible in the distance as a dark broken line across the shining stretch of water.

Third Grade Tour: History Mysteries
The Roman emperor Vespasian sits in an interior receiving a document from a standing figure to the right of the composition. The emperor is dressed in a white robe and sits on a red chair to the left of the composition. The interior is largely dark, with the exception of the emperor, whose figure is brightly lit.<br />The painting is in the original frame, which is constructed to resemble a Roman Temple with base, entablature, and fluted ionic pilasters.

Fourth Grade Tour: Material Matters
square ding (ting) tripod with four legs, the body as well as the upper portion of the four legs is decorated with "t'ao-t'ieh" zoomorphic design. One of the leg was recast after the rest of the body has been completed, thus had a less refined craftmanship and joint line at its base. The double loop handles are also decorated with zoomorphic design. A group of three inscription is cast on the upper portion of the interior wall, which reads as Fu (father) Ji (day name), followed by an symbolic representation of a chariot, possibly a clan emblem. The interior is plain, the animal bone remains attached to the bottom and variations in patina patterns with a line running through the middle indicates that the vessel was once filled with cooked meat offerings, presumably in a Shang elite burial in late second millennium B.C.E.

Fourth Grade Tour: Getting Along
Gilt and lacquered wooden table of ten-piece altar set. Not including the base, the set is designed in three rows, which simultaneously recede from the viewer and increase in height, culminating in one central table that rises above the rest allocated for a statue of the Buddha. Each table is carved along the edges in stylized floral and leaf patterns coated with gold gilt. The wood surfaces of the tables are coated in red lacquer, and with the exclusion of the short, wide base, each table in the set includes a mirror designed to face the viewer.

Fifth Grade Tour: A Single Shard
Tall hourglass-shaped stand. Composed of three separate parts: two bowls and a connecting cylinder. The pieces are unified with appliqu&eacute;d bands encircling the cylinder horizontally as well as evenly spaced cut-out shapes of rectangles and triangles leading up the stand vertically in lines.<br /> <br /> This is a dark grayish brown, cylindrical, high-fired stoneware vessel stand. Parts of the bowl-shaped section have a yellowish brown tint. The walls of the vessel are relatively thick and have a coarse texture. The upper part of the neck has a flared profile, but its rim slopes inwards. The cylindrical neck is divided into three sections by thick double raised bands. In each section of the neck are rectangular perforations that are vertically aligned with those of the other sections. The bell-shaped pedestal is divided into three sections by thin raised bands and has perforations vertically aligned with those of the cylindrical neck. Fifth Grade Tour: Science Sleuths
Wood-carved, standing male figure 40 inches in height. Its shoulders and torso are impaled with iron blades, nails and fragments. The torso is long, arms at side are bent at elbow and hands rest on lower abdomen. The right wrist wears a bracelet with attachments. The legs are truncated, with twisted metal anklet on right foot. The face is naturalistic, the mouth slightly open, the nose long and narrow with slightly flared nostrils. Eyes are almond shaped, may have had inlay that is now gone. The top of the head shows a tiered, "layer cake like" coiffure. The figure has a long and deep crack down the entire length of its left side, from top of the head to the left ankle.

High School Tour Options
This is a brightly colored oil painting of a street scene. Buildings are depicted in pink, yellow, and white.  A lavender and blue sky with white and yellow clouds makes up the background. Two women stand in the lower left corner; another woman and a black dog are seen on the right side. The ground is made up of patches of white, yellow, pink, and blue.  Thick black outlines are used throughout and the paint has been applied in a very thick and factured manner. Traces of newspaper appear to have been laid on the painting while it was still wet and became stuck and are visible in the clouds at the top and in the white portion of the central building, just under the street lamp.

Description: Historians use primary sources as clues to answer questions about who, what, when, where, and why events occurred. This tour uses art as primary sources for students, so they can mine for clues about history and also about artists’ motivations.


Concepts: Social Studies (Use primary and secondary sources, chronology and timelines, diaries and written evidence) and Art (Compare the use of various materials to communicate ideas and sensory experiences)
