Subject matter
This is a photograph of the Temple of Apollo in Aegina, Greece; the last of eight photographs in Mary Peck’s portfolio, The Temples of Greece which is comprised of black-and-white photographs depicting dramatic Greek landscapes, each accented by ancient ruins. The rich tonal ranges in the prints reflect the majesty of the expansive scenes. As described in the introduction of the portfolio, at Apollo “the sea shows its special, Greek, metallic gleam, but it has its Greek body as well. The headland of the temples pushes palpably into it, and the skies explode. Light bursts forth out of chaos; mountains rise from the water. The column stands.” -Vincent J. Scully, 1982

Physical Description
This photograph depicts a temple on a narrow strip of land surrounded by the sea. The sky is full of clouds and the ocean water glistens below.
