One prominent genre among contemporary folk painters is memory painting, when the artist paints either their own memories or those of an imagined past. Memory paintings often feature family or community activities, or scenes that include stereotypes or now-obsolete objects. Many memory paintings, like By the Light of the Moon, take place in rural settings and convey a sense of contentment and nostalgia for life in the past. Hornberger runs a contemporary roadside studio in Carmine, Texas.
