Jar
This light reddish-buff earthenware <em>guan (</em>罐) jar has a wide globular upper body and a conical lower body on a narrow flat base with a narrow neck and flaring rim. There are two diametrically opposed lug handles at the waist. Painted on the upper half of the body with black pigment are a network of rhomboid shapes, hatch-marks and dots confined within solid band borders, with a lobed line border below.  Around the neck are a painted "X" design, hatch marks and a lobed border to the interior.

This black terracotta is broken at the waste and depicts a simple body decorated with globs of clay decorated with punch-marked decorations. The face is modeled a bit more realistically with wide-open eyes and a full mouth. The front of her hair is in a series of rounded ball-like curls and a circular starburst decoration is at the top. The other oval globs frame the face of the goddess and cascade down what is left of her body.<br />

The Daibutsu (Great Buddha) at Kamakura
The daibutsu, or giant buddha, statue takes up the bulk of the pictorial space. Curving upwards and towards the statue is a large pine. At the feet of the green hued daibutsu statue are three women of different generations: a young girl, an adult woman, and an elderly woman. Although a few clouds hover in the sky, the sun appears to be shining brightly, casting some shadows of nearby trees into the picture.

Bodhisattva (Jokaisho Bosatsu): esoteric Buddhist iconographic drawing
An illustration of the bodhisattva Jokaishō, the divine figure is seated on a lotus blossom venerating a reliquary. The figure sits cross-legged on a red lotus blossom, while beneath the figure is a blue sutra box on a green and yellow lotus. The image is depicted with largely even "iron-wire" lines typical of Heian period Buddhist painting.

Ragamala series: Ragini Patamanjari
A female figure with her two attendants is shown in the bottom left of the image; a male figure appears in the window above, also accompanied by a female attendant who appears to be in conversation with him. The male holds a small flower in his hand--possibly a rose. The architectural space is divided skilfully, with distinct scenes or motifs taking place in each quadrant of the depicted scene.

Ragamala series: Ragini Gujari
A lady plays a musical instrument (most probably the rudra vina) in the center-left of the composition. Within the palace setting are also two attendants--one standing with a fly whisk above her mistress's head, the other seated in the right edge of the picture. A peacock with his feathers on full display is depicted in the center-left of the image, amidst the action enveloping the female figures. Utensils are placed on the staircase below the scene.

Red Raku ware tea bowl with imprinted leaf designs
This rustic, earth tone ceramic tea bowl has a rough, natural feeling texture. Impressed into the outer sides of the tea bowl are the imprints of pine needles.

Stupa: Hyakuman tô (one of one million pagodas)
Wooden miniture model of a tower, comprised of a round base, a bar in the middle where three larger discs and six or seven small discs are inserted. A bulb-shaped ornament rests on top.

A porcelain ewer with a cylindrical body on a foot ring and a tall, narrow neck. It has a flat, wide, ear-shaped handle, covered with underglaze blue floral meander and clear glaze, and a replacement silver spout and domed lid.

This is a squat stoneware jar with a wide globular shoulder on a narrow foot ring. Lotus petal lappets surround the base, and a peony scroll relief surrounds the body. The jar has a domed lid top with a wide flange and a ball knob; the area between is incised with scrolling meander. The object is covered in an olive green celadon glaze.

This fragment of a stoneware box lid has straight sides with a shoulder curving to a flat top. The lid has a finely detailed dragon in relief inside a twisted rope roundel border against a ground of finely incised floral meander, covered in a light gray celadon glaze.

Thirty-six Immortal Poets: Taira no Kanemori
A male figure is sitting sideways, his face looking toward the front right. He wears a long black cap, a red under-kimono, a grayish-color jacket with geometric patterns, and right gray color pantaloons. He holds a fan, which is peeking from the right sleeve. The painting is accompanied by calligraphy on the right side of the figure. The painting is mounted on gold brocade with strips of purple and gold brocade on top and bottom of the painting.

Buzurjmihr Interprets a Dream for Nushirwan, from the Shahnama of Firdausi
This Persian miniature is attributed to the Shiraz and Timurid schools, ca. 1460. The painting is done in ink, opaque watercolor and gold leaf on paper. The scene, <em>Buzurjmihr Interprets a Dream for Nushirwan</em>, is part of the Shahnama of Firdausi, the Persian book of kings.

Vajra bell (Lontjeng) (one of a pair)
This is one of a pair of Javanese bells. A talon-like vajra sits atop the bronze handle. Lotus petals decorate the base, and the faces encircling the the bell above them depict Prajnaparamita, the bodhisattva aspect of “Perfection of Wisdom.”

Subject matter
Buddha in intricate costume standing on a lotus pedestal. Such elaborate decoration has come to characterize Thai Buddhist imagery of the 19th and 20th centuries. Hands form double abhaya mudra (the gesture of reassurance), called “calming the ocean” by Thais.
