Hercules

A nude man seen from behind raises a staff to ward off the blow of a standing female figure, also with a staff. The woman's swing is directed to two seated figures at the lower left: a nude woman and a satyr. In the distance is an elaborate gated city and landscape.

This impressively large engraving depicts the muscular back of a marble statue of a man. The figure leans upon a club draped with a lion skin and holds three apples in his right hand behind his back. Two men look up at the statue from the lower right corner of the print.

A muscular man towers over a mountainous landscape in this engraving. Clothed only in a helmet, sandals, and flowing cape, his startling physique is on full display. He grasps a sword and shield and strides vigorously toward the background, where a knot of men battle at the foot of a mountain.

Study of a Male Nude with Floating Drapery

This study of a male nude set within a niche combines a skilled portrayal of anatomy with a powerful evocation of movement and emotional intensity. Through the carefully rendered arms and swirling draperies the artist expands and animates the space around the figure, who seems to surge forward even as he turns his head back in a gesture of despair.

This engraving reproduces a relief sculpture from the second century CE of Roman soldiers under Emperor Trajan conquering the Dacians in what is today Romania. The sculpture was later removed from its original monument built to honor Trajan and incorporated into the Arch of Constantine, erected in Rome by the emperor Constantine between 312 and 315.<br />
The relief depicts mounted Roman soldiers, dressed in their characteristic armor and helmets, surging to the left and right from the center of the scene. A group of soldiers sounding horns stands in their midst. The Romans' vanquished Dacian foes lie trampled beneath the horses' hooves.

Battle of the Sea Gods

This black and white print depicts an animated and detailed scene of nude figures and mythical beasts on the surface of the sea.Two men, with seaweed hair and riding half horse/half fish creatures, strike out at each other. A man and a woman ride a beast with a scaly body and the head of a fierce dog. In the background, a man holding a trident stands with his back to the viewer. Action and motion are expressed with billowing drapery, flowing hair and moving waves. The wide mouthed expressions of the figures and animals suggest yelling and noise in this chaotic scene. Among the many details depicted by the artist is a plaque held by the woman that has his initials.

This engraving depicts a frieze-like arrangement of figures in horizontal format. Two central figures are engaged in a duel on horseback. Several other nude male figures are engaged in battle throughout the composition. The artist's monogram is placed in the upper left corner of the image.

Three grief-striken figures lament over the body of a dead man lying on the ground before them. One of these figures, a robed woman who clasps her hands in agony, leans forward to peer into the face of the dead man, who is rendered with dramatic foreshortening. To the left of this woman sits a long-haired man wiping his eyes while another woman with wild unkempt hair seated next to him raises her arms in abject sorrow. Three nails and a pair of vessels sit in the immediate foreground next to the artist's initials "HGB."

This miniature painting depicts a group of male figures gathered around a coffin draped with a blue cloth. Two pairs of candles set on tall candlesticks are placed at the head and foot of the coffin. To the left of the coffin stand four mourners wearing long gray robes with hoods. Facing them from the other side of the coffin are three tonsured clergymen dressed in white, who look at an open book placed before them. The group stands upon a green tiled floor next to a pink wall. The background is painted red and decorated with an exuberant pattern of gold scrolling foliage motifs.
