Credit LineGift of Mrs. Carrol RobertsenSubject matterThis is a double-sided illuminated manuscript leaf in a rectangular format, which is compartmentalized using smaller rectangles and marginal vignettes. Both sides of the leaf feature floriated borders or frame bands of gold leaf, blue, and red that encase Arabic script in the central field. The floral borders comprised of stylized orange and pink pansies, white lotus blossoms, and blue bells that are surmounted by a repeated ogival arch pattern. The combination of vegetal and geometric designs produce variety and enliven the page. Triangular marginal vignettes with arabesque designs help frame the text, while adding ornamentation. The borders
and bands within the text may indicate divisions such as chapters or verses.
