Subject matter
In this detail of the central portal on the north transept at Reims Cathedral, French photographer François Rothier focuses on the figure of Christ on the trumeau, positioning his head at the center of both the vertical and horizontal axes. Details from the frieze above, which depicts scenes from the Last Judgment, divide the background into two horizontal halves behind the central figure. This photograph, one of many photographs of the cathedral at Reims that Rothier took between 1867 and the turn of the century, is now of great historical importance as it shows the sculpture of Christ before its head was destroyed in 1914.
