Subject matter
Photographed from the upper stories of a building, this image depicts a street scene in the Italian city of Milan. The regal buildings along the gently curving street are lined with tall windows, balconies and shop awnings. Near the corner of a sunbathed piazza, a pharmacy’s awning is visible behind a row of corinthian columns. The street is mostly cast in shadow by the buildings on the left, however a sliver of light rakes horizontally across the pavement in the middleground, the dark figures of pedestrians and horse-drawn carts are momentarily illuminated as they pass through the light. Embedded in the street’s paving are the iron rails for street trams, signaling the beginning of Milan’s industrialization. In the distance, the street terminates before the ornate, opulent spires of the Gothic cathedral of Milan’s Duomo. The perspective lines of the buildings, shutters and rooflines all point towards this monumental landmark, its otherworldly magnificence gleaming in the sunlight.
