Subject matter
Created with a slightly upward angle, this photograph depicts two middle-aged fishermen mending a large fishing net which hangs in-between them and the camera. Filling the entire frame, the mesh of the hanging net creates a lace-like pattern that’s overlaid onto the information beyond, appearing white against the shadowed values and dark against the sky. The man on the left is shirtless, his eyes focused on his hands, which are in the act of tying two strands together. The man on the right wears a long white polo shirt and a brimmed hat, and his eyes meet the camera, a half-smile forming on his face. Behind the two men is a shack-like structure made of hewn wood, branches, dried palm fronds, and corrugated iron. Tiny bits of seaweed clump variously in the mesh of the net, forming scattered black dots that stand out against the sky.
