Credit LineGift of Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo and Maria PhillipsSubject matterThis poster was originally exhibited at New York’s World Trade Center as part of Earth Day in New York in 1995. Paul Rand was commissioned, along with 9 other designers to create posters for the exhibition. Rand refrains from using images of the Earth or other explicitly environmental images. The symbolism of the design is simple: Rand creates a grid of hearts all in green, except for one in red. Rand relates love to environmentalism by repeating the motif of a green heart. The inclusion of a single red heart reminds the viewer of the humanism involved in environmentalism. Humans, and their capacity to love, are essential in the fight against environmental issues.
