Van Mieris made three paintings showing the Trojan prince and shepherd Paris with the nymph Oenone in a landscape. Our drawing may be a preparatory study or copy of one of these. Its exquisitely soft effect comes from the artist's skillful handling of graphite and the way that this medium lies on the parchment.
