Label copy
Attribution and title from dealer; note on mat: "Possibly for one of the murals by Vanni at the Cappella di Santa Caterina in the Chiesa di San Domenico, Siena." However, composition bears no resemblance to fresco or any known studies for it. Attribution and title may be erroneous. See Riedl and Seidel, "Die Kirchen von Siena," (München: Bruckmann, 1992); and Riedl, Disegni dei Barocceschi Senese (Franco Vanni e Ventura Salimbnee) (Firenze: Leo S. Olschki, 1976). Susan E. Wegner (letter of Aug. 29, 1996 in object file) said that the work "is definitely not a drawing by Francesco Vanni" though "the work may be by some slightly older contemporary of Vanni's such as Niccolò Circignani." However, she is "not totally sold on an attribution to Circignani…"
