Subject matter
Family depicts a happy scene in which a mother reaches for a baby who is in the arms of another person. Käthe Kollwitz's artwork often centered on families but they were rarely happy scenes like this one. Instead they often showed grieving mothers: she lost a son in World War I and grandson in World War II.
