Take Your Pick: Online Exhibition

In 2019, UMMA launched an exhibition of 1,000 small snapshots that asked visitors to vote for their favorites. They could cast their ballot, receive an "I voted" sticker, and affect the direction of UMMA's collection practices. For when the exhibition closed, UMMA acquired the 250 photographs that received the most popular votes.

How could you teach with this online exhibition?

1. Ask students to vote for their favorite photograph, then respond: "Tell me why you chose that image," or "Tell me a story about what you imagine could happen here."

2. Choose one image. Ask "What is going on in this picture?" Then "What do you see that makes you say that?" (Visual Thinking Strategies)

3. Show the video "What Makes a Good Picture?" Ask students to define a good picture in their own words. Compare snapshots (ex. two landscapes of mountains, four still life compositions) and ask them to defend

4. Dig into an Exhibition Theme, such as How to Find Yourself in Anonymous Photos, and explore personal connections across time and geography

5. Math: look at voting statistics and calculate how many people voted for the top 250 (out of 1000) photos.
