Subject matter
This photograph provides a close-up view of a horse towing a cart full of sticks. The horse has come to a stop in the shade of a tree and part of its body is obscured by deep shadows while its right side is illuminated by the raking light of the sun. The branches and leaves of the tree and other foliage establish both the right and bottom edges of the photograph; the horse, in fact, appears almost nestled into the surrounding flora. The horse’s eye points back toward a harvester in the distance, which is surrounded by wide-open fields. This compositional strategy sets up a contrast, both visually and conceptually, between old and new farming methods.
