Subject matter
This intimate portrait of the Romanian sculptor Constanin Brancusi was taken in his Paris studio. As light fills the space, Brancusi is seated, surrounded by his tall stone and wood sculptures. Brancusi holds a blade in his hand, presumably taking a moment of pause from carving his sculptures. Edward Steichen, the photographer of this image, was introduced to Brancusi in Rodin's studio in 1914, and they became lifelong friends.
