Subject matter
The mannequin was a subject Atget returned to at several points throughout his career. In this image, a single headless mannequin is centrally framed and wearing what appears to be night clothes. Behind the form is a display window filled with shirts and other accessories, in addition to a glass display case with other objects intended for a male consumer. Atget may have been amused by the placement of this intimate and private garment in such a public location (possibly outside the shop).
