Credit LineGift from the Collection of David S. Rosen MD, MPHSubject matterStanding in the center of this photograph are a middle-aged man and woman, their arms wrapped around one another in an embrace. Though their expressions are neutral, their gaze into the camera’s lens reveals their obvious posing for the photograph. The man’s arms hold the woman by the waist, while her arms are draped about his neck, fingers intwined, the language of this embrace suggesting a close, physical intimacy between them. The man has a bald head and a handlebar mustache, the woman has long dark hair and glasses. The blurred, out-of-focus setting behind the figures appears to be a suburban neighborhood, with trees and houses and a street sign evident. Indicative of Polaroid Type 55 film—the kind of film used to create this image—a rectangular, white border made by chemical stains from the photo’s processing appears to float on top of the image, framing the figures inside. While this image has the appearance of a snapshot, the rich luster of the gelatin silver print imbues the moment with a palpable intentionality. This photograph is part of a series documenting the people in the photographer’s neighborhood in St. Johns, Portland, Oregon.
