Subject matter
Created from the top of the bell tower of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice, this photograph depicts a wide vista view of Venice’s Grand Canal looking southwest. This towering perspective allows one a panoramic view of the islands Dorsoduro and Giudecca, with the Venetian Lagoon stretching out beyond. The islands are populated with tightly compacted buildings with terra-cotta shingled roofs. In the center of the composition is the tip of Dorsoduro, upon which stands the baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute. To the church’s left sits a curved wharf that leads out to a fleet of docked sail ships. Running down the center of the Grand Canal are the blurry forms of two vessels, their appearances obfuscated by their movement during the camera’s long exposure. The glow off the lagoon’s waters and the white marble of the buildings causes this albumen print to feel saturated with radiant warmth and light.

Physical Description
This photograph depicts a wide, ariel view of a city situated on thin strips of land with wide canals running between them. On the central island is a large white church and a wharf with a docked fleet of boats.
