Subject matter
In this photograph, two figures in the middleground walk along a semi-submurged sand bar. The shallow water rises over the sand bar and reflects the soft lilac light of the sky much in the same way the ocean's surface does in the middleground. From the perspective of the viewer, a rocky, seaweed-laden sandy beach forms the foreground of the image. Characteristic of Meyerowitz's seascape photographs, the horizon line between sea and air is blurred, such that the sea seemingly appears only to end with the parting of the wispy clouds to reveal the warmer toned sky light in the upper half of the photograph.
