Credit LineGift of the Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at AustinSubject matterAsesinato del General Sandino detrás del Viejo Campo de Aviación shows the assasination of General Sandino who was the leader of the Nicaraugan rebel forces. The print is part of the series titled the
Saga of Sandino. While it is known that Sandino was killed in 1934, the exact method and location of his remains is unknown. The narrative presented in this print has previously not been put forward as a theory, but may be just a dramatic reimagining of what the event would have been like.
Similar to Goya's famous painting
The Third of May 1808, Morales heightens the contrast of light and dark to add pathos. The illumination of the lamp on the soon to be executed men's faces makes them seem angelic compared to the unidentifiable executioners.
Physical DescriptionThree kneeling men are being executed by soldiers. The soldiers are wearing masks and holding guns.
