Subject matter
Frank Stella, a pioneer of Minimalism, created repetitious patterned paintings. Stella is also known for his experiments with printmaking. He began with lithography and eventually transitioned to other forms of media that pushed the boundaries of printmaking. He first began working with printer Kenneth Taylor of Gemini G.E.L in the 1960s. This print is notable for its complex layering of forms. Stella has been known to use CAD/CAM technology to create vector graphics and 3D models which are incorporated into his 2D prints like Riallaro (Black and White). The almost depthless menagerie of patterned shapes creates a sort of endless vacuum of imagery. The color version of this print is part of the series Imaginary Places.

Physical Description
Black and white abstract design of various lines and shapes layered over a white and black polka dot background that gradually transitions from grey at the top to black at the bottom.
