Subject matter
Actor Iwai Shijaku I, also known as Iwai Hanshirō VII, was the oldest son of Iwai Hanshirō V.  He was born in 1804 and died in 1845.

Revenge at Tengajaya is a revenge play based on historical events that took place near Osaka.  It was written by Nagawa Kamesuke I and first performed in 1781 in Osaka. It follows the Hayase brothers through their vendetta against the murderer of their father and is known for its violent scenes.
 

Physical Description
In this print, a woman sits on the ground outside of a building.  She wears a blue robe decorated with flowers.  She holds a tool in her right hand.  The interior of the building is visible behind her.
