Credit LineGift of Dr. James HayesSubject matterKataoka Gadō III was also known as Kataoka Nizaaemon XI. He was born in Edo to a family of kabuki actors in 1857. He was active in kabuki from 1860 until his death in 1934. He was known for his roles in
jidaimono (period plays) and
sewamono (contemporary plays) as
tachiyaku (lead protagonist), villain, and
onnagata (“female role” or “female form”).
Physical DescriptionIn this image, a man sits next to an open umbrella. He wears a black robe with a white and purple sash. He holds an open scroll in his hands. The wall behind him is missing in places.
