Credit LineGift of Herbert BarrowsSubject matterIn the mid 1960s, Diebenkorn drew/printed several similar scenes that depicted a table and air, sometimes with a figure sitting in a chair at a table. They are shown in his characteristic flattened perspective where the viewer is looking down, somewhat, at the scene and the objects seem to tilt up creatig a decorative surface pattern while remaining representational. In 1964, Diebenkorn received a Cultural Exchange Grant from the U.S. State Department that allowed him to visit the Soviet Union. Diebenkorn was influenced by Henri Matisse's paintings during this visit, although he was first exposed to his work at a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1952. Diebenkorn was known for his figurative works, and was one of the founding members of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. 1963-1964 is characterized by the artist's lyrical figurative drawings; 1965 was the start of the artist's late figurative works.

Physical DescriptionThis is a dark, black and white drawing of the interior of a room. In the foreground is a table with a white saucer, silverware, white mug, and glass on top. On the other side of the table is a chair. A smaller table is visible behind the chair in the background of the drawing with a white object on it. The drawing is on medium thick, smooth white wove paper. There are very visible brush strokes across the drawing, and the paper is crinkled from moisture.
