Credit LineGift of Selma & Gerald LotenbergSubject matterIn this photograph, a group of men wearing jeans and cowboy hats congregate in a tight circle on a street corner in front of an apparel store. They look around the corner to see two men--similarly outfitted--walking towards them. One of the men is turning his head backwards, looking beyond the left edge of the frame. Despite the static grouping of figures, the series of glances sets up a dynamic space beyond the frame of the photograph, as if expectant of more men yet to arrive. Meyerowitz creates a clever visual by juxtaposing the men in cowboy gear next to a mural of a Native American shooting a bow-and-arrow.
