Grammar: Ekphrastic Wordplay

Using images to teach sentence structure

Lesson Plan:

  1. Choose an image. Project or print it, so you are able to refer to it while writing.

  2. Progress through each grammatical form in a separate session. After students create their sentences, they can share them with a small group or the entire class. Work to choose strong subjects and verbs.

  3. Compose a poem that employs at least four sentence structures. Publish the poem with the chosen image.

Grammar Progression: Sentence Structure

1. Subject + Verb

2. Subject + Verb, coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) + Subject + Verb

4. Subject, Verb, Verb, coordinating conjunction + Verb
